Stock Semi-Pro IV Results for April 9th, 2008
Under the Arizona sky with night time lights blazing hot, M_Yanoska grabs his first win of the season at PIR! With a field of 15 drivers, 3 cautions, and a green flag pit stop, competition was tough but Mike took his CKE Restaurants Ford to the Winners Circle by a margin of more than 10 seconds!
15 drivers showed up at our 8th race, for the Subway Fresh Fit 500, this time under the lights of the NR2007 track of Phoenix International Raceway. Mike got the pole, with his PSI teammate Andy right beside him, as they led this pack of hungry racers for 125 laps. This race had a mixture of yellow and green flag pit stops, making it an interesting racing and thinking mans game. Fuel would last for 44 laps, and beware the one who did not take care of his cars fuel needs.
Mike led the first lap, but was then overtaken by Andy. John was like lightning early on and soon passed both of them, eventually leading the most laps of the race. Early casualty of the race was Don, who self-spun with no one around. He didn't hit the wall and just pitted and retired mysteriously. Rob and Shriner got some action early on as the first caution was dealt, with Shriner receiving some engine damage.
Green flag, Green flag! Rob would later get some wall to share in Shriners bad luck. John got the fastest lap of the day as he starting pulling away in front. Matt was using 3rd gear in the turns when something happened to him and he went into pits to retire. Some close calls all around during this run, and then the first green flag pit stop got underway.
After the round of pit stops, John still found himself in the lead, with our polesitter less than 2 seconds behind and closing. Jim and Dusty traded some paint soon after, with Gary looking on and just avoiding Jim's spinning car, as our 2nd caution flag of the day flew. Jim decided to just retire and end the misery. Dave, our points leader, stayed out for those 5 bonus points then went into the pits. John had to repair some damage, so he relinquished the lead back to Mike.
Around Lap 80, the yellow flew for the final time as Eli and Phil got together, with Phil being introduced to the wall as Rob swerved and spun, getting some more wall to add to the donuts already on his car. This is where those who didn't prepare for fuel would get their behind handed back to them. Some pitted, some didn't. Those that didn't would pay the price, because we were exactly at the fuel pit window. Those that realized at the last second they better pit or else were Mike, Gary, and Shriner, who all just made the commitment cone. John pitted a total of 3 times, probably thinking that the fuel window was too tight. He would have a long fight ahead of him, as the restart saw him in 9th.
No more cautions and the fight was on. Andy led the way with Dave right behind him, both of which didn't pit and would have to pit before the finish line. John, Dusty, and Les had some close situations, with Les almost losing control at one point, but he kept control as John took off to get some positions. Mike eventually passed Dave and Andy, as they both contemplated when they wanted to pit. Gary closed up on Andy and started using 3rd gear in the turns to try to make the pass, only to lose 4th gear, as he soon started falling behind in the remaining laps.
With 10 laps to go, first Dave dropped off into pits, then Andy. This left Mike with no heat in front or behind him, as he took the checkered flag! Another fine show put on by SSP4.
